Welcome to FTW Explains, a guide to catching up on and better understanding stuff going on in the world. You may have noticed a bunch of NBA players tweeting and Instagramming pictures of Arthur, a famous cartoon aardvark. So how did this all get started? We’re here to explain.

What is the Arthur meme? Where did it come from?

The screenshot of Arthur’s fist comes from an episode of the show titled Arthur’s Big Hit. During the episode, Arthur’s little sister D.W. throws his model airplane out of his bedroom window in an attempt to test its ability to fly. Arthur is overcome with rage when he discovers the damaged plane on the sidewalk, and he retaliates by punching D.W.

The clip has been featured in countless YouTube parodies, but the screencap of Arthur’s fist became a widespread meme on Twitter and Reddit in 2016. According to Know Your Meme, the image famously blew up in a post on Reddit titled “when people say Harambe was just a gorilla.”

Why has the Arthur meme become such a big deal in the NBA?

It’s LeBron James’ fault. The Cavaliers had an off night on November 6th, and just moments after the Boston Celtics beat the Hawks, James posted this photo to his Instagram page.
