What Do The Latest SOLO: A STAR WARS STORY Reshoots Mean?

BestsellerMagazine.com - CATEGORY News today: TITLE

Disney and Lucasfilm have released a new >

Solo: A Star Wars Story

trailer for the highly anticipated spinoff. The film stars

Alden Ehrenreich as a younger iteration of the titular Star Wars character made iconic by

Harrison Ford , and charts his early adventures as he first crosses paths with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian (

Donald Glover) and the Millennium Falcon first comes to be in his possession.

The film very publicly went through production troubles as directors

Phil Lord and

Chris Miller (The LEGO Movie) left over creative differences with three weeks left of filming to go. Lucasfilm subsequently tapped

Ron Howard to take over as director, working from the screenplay originated by

Lawrence Kasdan and

Jon KasdanSolo marks Lucasfilm’s second effort at what were originally conceived as “anthology”-type stories—spinoffs that don’t take place in the episodic chronology, but tell other stories set within the Star Wars universe. The first was

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

, which was a ground-level tale of the team that stole the plans for the Death Star in the events leading up to

A New Hope

Solo‘s chronology predates that film but, obviously, takes place after the events of the prequels.

This trailer is much better than that initial teaser, which felt a bit off. This one gives a stronger sense of Solo himself, and Ehrenreich seems to be doing a fine job. Glover’s Lando steals the show once again—I wouldn’t be surprised if the takeaway from this movie is everyone wanting to see a Lando movie instead. And

Bradford Young‘s cinematography is jaw-droppingly good.

In terms of revelations, it appears as though

Paul Bettany crime lord Dryden Vos is the film’s primary antagonist, which is interesting considering the character was originally going to be a CG creature inhabited by

Michael K. Williams. When Williams was unable to do the reshoots, Howard recast the role and dropped the CG-ification of the character. Additionally, we see that Chewie’s got a significant other here (who will no doubt perish), and

Woody Harrelson‘s Tobias Beckett, Han’s mentor, seems to be the root of a lot of his trust issues. By and large, while I still don’t need a Han Solo movie, I remain fascinated by the existence of Solo.

Emilia Clarke

Phoebe Waller-Bridge

Joonas Suotamo
