Ok, that was a reasonable enough answer so I suppose I’ll respond. You may be right that it’s a gray area legally, but my viewpoint on the matter is from a common decency perspective. People are getting hung up on the duration of the video and the number of incidents. It was shortened for emphasis, (most likely) budgetary restrictions, and general practicality. As said at the end this happened 100’s of times over the duration of the experiment.
Let’s put this on an average man. Walking down the street, if someone said, “Hello, how are you?”, you might give a simple friendly response. Imagine this happened dozens more times over the course of your walk. Still not bad, but responding to everybody starts to get a little tiring; you had a long day at work and now you have to go to a dinner you’re not particularly excited about, so you’re in a grumpy mood to begin with. Now imagine every 5th time this happens it’s not, “Hello, how are you?”, but something along the lines of, “Damn, look at that ASS!”, with an expectation of a positive response. Not only are you grumpy, but it starts to make you uncomfortable. Now add that if you don’t respond to that comment, the person screams, “Fine, fuck you, prick. It was a compliment! Asshole!”. Now you’re starting to feel downright threatened. Then one day this all happens as expected, and when you don’t respond the person follows you and yells at you for a few blocks. Do you think you’re going to respond to the next person?
Now finally imagine you realize this isn’t happening to 50% of the population. That this is happening to you because of a singular element of your being, and that you are being isolated for that one incomplete element of who you are. You go from being grumpy to bring demoralized, downtrodden, and genuinely fearful to walk the streets of the city you live in. Is this any way we should expect the citizens of our nation to live?
Claim the law is on your side all you want. Claim “boys will be boys”. Claim that they should shut up and deal with it because that’s the way it is. To me, it all boils down to the fact that it is a systemic flaw in the way we treat women as a society. It is shameful and represents a complete lack of empathy towards the other sex.
