The Meaning Behind The Anonymous Elbow On TIMEs People Of The Year Cover - CATEGORY Breaking news: TITLE

Taylor Swift and Ashley Judd are among the women who feature on the front cover of TIME magazine’s person of the year issue – and now it has been revealed why there is also an anonymous elbow on the cover.

Former Uber software engineer Susan Fowler, California lobbyist Adama Iwu, and strawberry picker Isabel Pascual also all appear on the cover, as does a sixth woman whose face appears to have been cut off.

That however was one on purpose, with TIME national correspondent Charlotte Alter revealing on Wednesday that the sixth woman is a hospital worker ‘who is a hospital worker who was experiencing harassment and didn’t feel that she could come forward’.

‘A huge part of this story is that, as much as the stigma around this has been removed this year because of the Me Too movement, it’s still really difficult for a lot of women to come forward,’ Alter said Buzzfeed’s morning show.

‘It’s important to include people who have to stay anonymous for professional reasons, who don’t have the resources to weather what would happen if they lost their job or they couldn’t support their families. So we wanted to include people where, to really reference the risk that these women are taking by speaking out about this.’
