TATLER, the high-society magazine, has published its guide to Britain’s best state secondary schools.

The glossy publication, which believes the “best education isn’t always the most expensive”, has identified the 20 top non-fee paying institutions for 2018.

The prestigious list features Peter Symonds College, in Hampshire, which counts sailor Sir Ben Ainslie and model Alexa Chung among its former pupils.

Surrey's Nonsuch High School for Girls, which offers classes in Greek and astronomy, is highly commended.

But while the schools might not cost anything to attend, many do still have catchment areas that fall within some of the country's richest areas.

Arden Academy is situated in Knowle, a village in Birmingham's 'stockbroker belt' where families “swallow inflated property prices to get into catchment for the much sought-after non-selective”.

Meanwhile, to bag a place at St Alban’s Beaumont School, families have to live “under 987 metres” from the school gate, according to one parent.

Tatler has commended the schools for offering specialisms in subjects such as maths, computing and languages.

Mullion School on Cornwall's Lizard Island, for example, encourages pupils to take up performing arts.

Meanwhile, King James's School in North Yorkshire offers students a wide range of clubs including handbell-ringing and charity opportunities.
