STREATOR — Streator Fire Department contained a blaze to an attached garage of a home at 144 W. Bluff St., Sunday night.
Residents alerted the fire department by calling V-Com 911 center after smelling smoke. The fire department was alerted to the fire at 10:34 pm.
“The first fire crews arrived on scene in four minutes to find the attached garage of a 2-story home fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters used two hose lines in an effort to knock down the fire,” according to a fire department press release. “Crews then entered the home to look for fire extension and to ventilate the heavy smoke. The fire was under control in about 20 minutes. The fire department was able to contain the blaze to the garage. Fire crews remained on scene for 2 hours and 30 minutes.”
A total of 12 firefighters helped contain the blaze. All residents were able to escape the choking smoke. One Streator Firefighter was transported from the scene with minor injuries. The firefighter has been released from the hospital.
The single-car garage suffered severe fire, smoke and water damage. The rest of the two-story home suffered heavy smoke damage and minor fire and water damage. Residents of the home were assisted by the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation but is not considered suspicious. The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal, Streator Police Department,and Streator Fire Department are investigating cooperatively. Advanced Medical Transport, VCom, ComEd and Nicor assisted as well.
