TALLAHASSEE – Democratic gubernatorial candidate Chris King raised more than $514,000 last month, according to his campaign, signaling that the longshot is not getting out of the race before the qualifying period ends next month.

“As voters begin to tune into the governor’s race, our campaign is continuing to build support across Florida for Chris’s new leadership and fresh ideas,” said King campaign adviser Omar Khan. “This race is wide open and we will have the necessary resources to share Chris’s bold, progressive message with voters who are hungry for change.”

The details of King’s finance report for April aren’t available yet from the state Division of Elections. In March, his campaign reported bringing in $609,000, but when the official report was released it showed $425,000 of that total came from a personal loan King made to his campaign.

Official finance reports for April are due by Thursday.

King, a Winter Park businessman, is in fourth place in a four-person Democratic primary against former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham, Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum and Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine. He’s also behind in the money race to Graham and Levine, who have millions in the bank, and lacks a wealthy contributor like George Soros, who is funding much of Gillum’s campaign. Soros and his son, Alex, have given $500,000 to Gillum’s Forward Florida political committee, including a $250,000 donation last month.

The primary election is set for Aug. 28. Qualifying for statewide seats begins at noon June 18 and ends at noon June 22.
