Steelers QB Ben Roethlisberger: 'I Hope My Son Plays Golf', Not 'violent' Football - CATEGORY Latest news: TITLE

Monday night’s Steelers-Bengals had many discussing the longterm viability of football. It was tough to watch when Ryan Shazier went down with a spinal injury and the violent hits didn’t stop.

After the game, Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger simply described the vicious game as “AFC North football.” He changed that tune on Tuesday.

ESPN’s Lisa Salters: “Ben, how would you explain the viciousness and brutality of this game?”

Roethlisberger: “AFC North Football.”

You can never legislate the bravado out of the game, even with terrifying injuries.

In a radio appearance with 93.7 The Fan, Roethlisberger spoke about Shazier’s injury. He also added his thoughts about his son playing football. Roethlisberger said that he wouldn’t stop his son from playing football, but he really hopes he chooses golf.

“When we talked in the offseason about really evaluating and making sure, these are the reasons. And having kids, I hope my son plays golf. If he wants to play football that’s fine too but it’s a tough sport. It’s not for everyone. If he wants to do it, I’ll encourage it. If he doesn’t, I’m just fine with that as well.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for football.

Roethlisberger also said that he was unsure about Shazier’s injury, but he had heard “some really encouraging things.” Shazier remains hospitalized in Cincinnati.
