L. MACUNGIE TWP., Pa. - A pair of Lehigh County men are facing robbery and theft charges for allegedly robbing a 16-year-old of a rifle Saturday night in a Lower Macungie Township park.
Pennsylvania State Police charged Johnathon D. Gerhart, 20, and David M. Kline Jr., 19, with robbery, conspiracy, theft and receiving stolen property, all felonies. Gerhart also faces a single misdemeanor count of simple assault.
District Judge Daniel Trexler arraigned the pair Monday morning, setting bail for each at $50,000.
State police with the Fogelsville barracks were dispatched shortly after 8:30 p.m. Saturday to investigate a report of an armed robbery in Prater Park off North Hedgerow Drive. The 16-year-old told police that an acquaintance contacted him via SnapChat, asking to meet him in the park with a Keltec B2000 folding rifle to which he had access. He put the rifle in a backpack that also contained school supplies and other personnel items, according to court records.
The teen told police that he was grabbed from behind as he walked into the park, according to records. A second man approached and allegedly pointed a handgun against the victim’s chest, demanding “everything he had,” according to records.
After the two went through the victim’s pockets finding no money or valuables, the suspect holding him by the neck allegedly punched the teen in the head about four times. The robbers allegedly ordered the victim to go home and bring back something of value before grabbing the backpack and leaving the park.
He told police he recognized the two as former acquaintances. He identified the man with the gun as “D” and said his name was possible Kline. He also believed Gerhart was the man who assaulted him.
The teen identified Gerhart and Kline through their driver’s license photos.
State police visited Gerhart’s Vera Cruz Road home in Upper Milford Township shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday. A black Audi sedan described by witnesses was parked at the home.
Kline denied being involved in the incident and told police he had been with his mother all day, according to records. He also allegedly told police that he hadn’t seen Gerhart for days. Gerhart was found inside the house and apprehended; police also reported video surveillance showed the two in an Emmaus gun shop on Saturday.
The video surveillance also revealed a woman with the pair had purchased a box of handgun ammunition, which Gerhart allegedly reported was for Kline.
Neither man posted bail. They were sent to Lehigh County Jail to await preliminary hearings scheduled for May 8.
