The trial of three FIFA officials facing corruption charges took an unexpected star-turn Thursday when Kevin Jonas — of the Jonas Brothers — was called to the stand.
Prosecutors summoned the pop star to Brooklyn Federal Court to confirm he’d attended a Paul McCartney concert in Buenos Aires in 2010.
Juan Angel Napout, the former president of two soccer federations under the FIFA umbrella, is accused of accepting bribes — including tickets worth over $10,000 to the McCartney concert.
But Napout’s attorneys have refused to even concede that the McCartney concert took place — so prosecutors called in Jonas to testify he attended the show at River Plate Stadium.
“How was the show?” Assistant United States Attorney Kirstin Mace asked.
“Any time you get to see Paul McCartney it is pretty special,” Jonas, 30, replied.
Napout’s attorney, Silvia Pinera-Vazquez, briefly cross-examined Jonas.
“Did you open for Paul McCartney?” Pinera-Vazquez inquired.
“He was performing. We got invited to the concert and we were just able to attend,” Jonas said.
The former boy bander left after less than five minutes of testimony through a backdoor, avoiding any gawkers.
Pinera-Vazquez admitted she was as surprised as just about everyone else in the courtroom.
“I am star struck, judge. I grew up with these — my daughters,” Pinera-Vazquez said before being cut off by Judge Pamela Chen.
Napout is on trial for racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering charges.
He is being tried alongside two other ex-South American soccer presidents, Manuel Burga and Jose Maria Marin.
The three deny they accepted kickbacks.
Prosecutors are expected to rest their case Friday.
They have charged dozens of soccer officials with accepting a fortune in bribes from executives seeking to influence lucrative commercial rights to tournaments.
