The Lakers are winning, and Luke is getting BBQ in Memphis.
The Los Angeles Lakers have found themselves in the middle of a firestorm surrounding head coach Luke Walton, even if the winning streak has done a good job of suppressing the initial spark that was LaVar Ball questioning if Walton lost the locker room.
Brian Windhorst of ESPN took a second swing at the situation, indicating that the entire situation has generated buzz within those around the league that the Lakers are handling this as if they don’t fully have Walton’s back, and even floated the idea of David Fizdale replacing him to sweeten the pot for LeBron James.
The crux of Windhorst’s argument was that the Lakers didn’t throw themselves in front of the comments from Ball, failing to show a response of “unconditional support.” Magic Johnson, Jeanie Buss and Rob Pelinka didn’t come out swinging for their head coach, instead ignoring the comments altogether.
Walton was clear that he didn’t feel threatened that a quote was circulating about his ability to coach the team, showing full confidence the front office has his back despite no public comment on the situation. Then, the Lakers started winning again.
Lo and behold, Magic and Buss have given their public sign offs for Luke as the Lakers settle into their four-game winning streak, taking to Twitter to show LUUUUUKE a little love:
