For one time and one time only Britain’s poshest magazine Tatler has thrown open its doors to its eccentric world within.
From reporting at lavish hunting balls to visiting Britain’s grandest stately homes to fashion week parties and that etiquette book that every single member of staff is forced to abide by, BBC2’s three-part behind-the-scenes documentary is nothing short of fascinating.
But the figures behind the high-society magazine, which has a ‘small but loyal’ readership of 160,000 – from editor Kate Reardon to managing director Nicholas Coleridge – make the Mark Francis and Spencer Matthews of our world look like mere commoners.
To give you a taste, here are some highlights from the first episode (and you’d never catch Jamie, Louise, Binky and co saying any of this):
As a teenager stuck in an all-girls boarding school, I devoured Tatler. I’m a honking great Sloane.

Where the PR and designer decide to sit you at fashion week in relation to Anna Wintour is totally a public declaration of your status
It doesn’t mean if you didn’t go to Eaton you’re any less valid, necessarily, in life. But for Tatler people, possibly, yeah
The editor then reveals how when someone new arrives at Tatler they are given their very own copy of Debrett’s New Guide to Etiquette and Modern Manners – and most of them think they’re taking the micky…
So some favourite anecdotes?…
The proper way to eat a pear is with a spoon
True aficionados eat caviar form the small pad of flesh between the thumb and forefinger on the outside of their left hand
When kissing, under no circumstances should there be any suggestion of saliva
And when visiting a Poundland store for a feature…
Whether you’re a Lord who can’t afford servants anymore or simply a frugal toff, Tatler tries to guide its readers through unfortunate times
And to round everything off?…
In real life people don’t go shooting that often or go to that many hunting balls, but I think people feel very soothed that the Tatler world still exists
Posh People: Inside Tatler starts tonight on BBC2 at 9pm.
