Indian team manager as quoted by ESPNCricinfo, “The match referee called me at tea time in case the wicket got dangerous, in which case both the captains would be consulted. We had the view that the wicket has been the same for all three days. Today we had the highest strike rates and the least wickets. We would like to continue playing. The match referee was fearful that in case the new ball was going to be taken, it might be behave dangerously. The ball that hit Dean Elgar on his helmet was the reason play was called off today. We are willing to play. Umpires are the final judges on the fitness of the ground, regardless of the views of either of the captains. The final decision lies with the umpires. Expecting a decision tomorrow morning.”
Play has been stopped here. The wicket is deemed too dangerous to play. The players go to match-referee’s office. But was Elgar’s technique right there? It was a short ball that Elgar should have ducked. He got struck on the head. Kohli is not happy.
It’s also drizzling. The covers are on.
Rahul should learn from Elgar. He is so talented. Elgar with his limited abilities puts a serious price tag on his wicket. He will take all the blows on the body and carry on.
Bumrah into the attack and straightaway pins Elgar’s waist. He manages two and the next ball rises from nowhere and hits Elgar on the helmet. This is scary. He is getting ice-pack on his head. Umpires may stop the play. Match referee is out in the middle. This is scary. This is dangerous. That is nasty.
Shami seems to have rediscovered his mojo. Full of josh in the last session!

Don't celebrate yet. You still have to take 9 wickets.#SAvIND

Brilliant from Shami. Not good from Markram. He got it to climb and move away, Markram commits himself to the shot, gets an edge and Parthiv takes a clean catch. Markram could have let it go. He played it away from his body. But that was a good ball.
OUT! Aiden Markram c Parthiv Patel b Mohammed Shami 4 (7)
I like the fact that Shami is taking the new ball. He has the pace and can seam the ball both ways. This should be interesting.
Elgar and Markram make their way out. Bhuvi strays on the pads and Markram clips it away for a boundary. That’s the start South Africa would have hoped for. Rest of the over, Bhuvi gets it to shape away, beating Markram once. The South African opener is happy to let go of the deliveries.
That’s it! Bumrah departs. First ball with the new ball, Bumrah tries to clear the mid-off, skies it and finds Rabada at mid-on. Philander picks 3. South Africa need 241 to win this Test.
OUT! Jasprit Bumrah c Rabada b Philander 0 (7)

India, who are looking to avoid a whitewash, were satisfied with their efforts for taking a lead of 42 and putting up 49 runs on board. However, they lost the wicket of Parthiv Patel who was caught at gully off Vernon Philander for 16. KL Rahul and Murali Vijay saw India through at the close of the day. South Africa bowlers were erratic with their deliveries yet Rahul and Vijay remained unbeaten on 16 and 13 respectively.
Earlier, Amla fought a hard battle top-scoring with 61 runs from 121 deliveries. Kagiso Rabada and Philander were the remaining batsmen to go past the double-digit scores in a total of 194. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar shared 7 wickets to restrict South Africa.
Rabada batted with patience and shared a much-needed third wicket stand of 64 runs with Amla until he was caught at gully off Ishant Sharma before lunch. However, there were several players who were struck on their hands and were treated right away. Morne Morkel and Philander suffered blows on their right hand.
