In yet another instance of cyber attack on a big brand, HBO has confirmed that it was the target of a hack this week when hackers allegedly made off with 1.5TB of data. Following the hack, episodes of some of the original HBO series along with crucial information related to the blockbuster hit series, Game of Thrones, has reportedly leaked online.
>Entertainment Weekly reports that upcoming episodes of Room 104 and Ballers, and at least one alleged script or treatment of next week’s fourth episode of Game of Thrones episode have surfaced online. The hackers have threatened that more leaks are ‘coming soon’. “HBO recently experienced a cyber incident, which resulted in the compromise of proprietary information,” HBO confirmed in a statement. “We immediately began investigating the incident and are working with law enforcement and outside cybersecurity firms. Data protection is a top priority at HBO, and we take seriously our responsibility to protect the data we hold.”
Although it is not clear what data has been compromised, HBO CEO Richard Plepler has sent out an email to employees, acknowledging the breach and assuring that steps are being taken to ensure protection. “Any intrusion of this nature is obviously disruptive, unsettling, and disturbing for all of us. I can assure you that senior leadership and our extraordinary technology team, along with outside experts, are working round the clock to protect our collective interests.”
Game of Thrones is one of the most popular series by HBO, and any leak associated with it is bound to create chaos. HBO has been battling piracy issues for the show, which has retained its top position as the most illegally downloaded show for five years in a row.
As HBO gets into damage-control mode, it is worth mentioning that this is not the first time a big entertainment brand has come under attack by cyber criminals. In what is said to be the biggest Hollywood hack, Sony was under siege in 2014 when hackers reportedly leaked around 100TB of data. In a more recent instance, hackers took over Netflix to release episodes from season 5 of Orange Is the New Black prior to official airing.
