"I think when it got to those high-intense, hard games like the state finals, we knew how to respond," Whitley said. "We would not break down. We'd handle the pressure. We almost trusted what [My father] told us through all the years and just let it kind of take over."

The 7 a.m. summer morning workouts at the Geneva Middle School track, pushup contests and more only partially tells the tale of Whitley's ascension to stardom.

Whitley burst on to the Geneva scene. In her first varsity start as a freshman, she weathered her flu-like symptoms for 20 points against Batavia.

The various sicknesses, however, kept around – evolving into eventual sinus surgery through her nose following her sophomore season. Whitley recovered just fine, helping lead the Vikings to its first state title in program history in the coming months.
