Elgin Cop Connects Sepeda's Gun In Murder To Tossed Magazine Cartridge And Holster

When investigators searched Alberto Sepeda’s Ford Fusion after he took police on a wild high-speed chase in November 2016, they found a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber, semiautomatic handgun with a round in the chamber but its magazine ejected and missing, Elgin Police Officer Thomas Coffield testified Wednesday.

Later, when they retraced the route Sepeda drove as he fled the scene where he shot Norbert Gutierrez to death, an extended magazine and a holster were found laying on Elgin streets, Coffield said at the second day of Sepeda’s trial on degree-murder charges.

Coffield showed the jury how that magazine — which holds 30 bullets — fits into the gun and how the gun and holster fit together.

Sepeda, 30, of Elgin, is charged with shooting and killing Gutierrez, 59, twice outside the man’s home in the 800 block of Morgan street in order to gain access to his then-girlfriend and their 1-year-old son, whom he then abducted. Gutierrez’s wife, daughter and grandchildren were inside the house at the time of the shooting.
