Candidates Weigh In On Transportation Priorities - CATEGORY Prime Report: TITLE

Jared Polis unveiled his plan Tuesday for transportation in Colorado if elected governor.

The Boulder Democrat said on a call with reporters that, if elected, he would advocate for funding high-speed commuter rail along the Front Range.

That would include pushing RTD to complete the Northwest Rail Line sooner than 2040.

"RTD is a special district where district residents have continued paying for rail since the vote for FasTracks and RTD are unacceptably behind schedule," Polis said. "As governor, I would push RTD to provide an acceptable schedule for the prompt delivery of Northwest Rail."

In 2004, district voters approved an additional .4 percent sales tax to fund FasTracks, a plan that included a commuter rail line from Denver, through Boulder and terminating in Longmont. RTD estimates for use of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe rail line were way below what BNSF said they would settle for and RTD has said there is no funding for the amount of service initially planned for the Northwest line until at least 2040.

City and county leaders are working with RTD on a reduced service plan so that fewer trains would run on the line, but the line could start much sooner, in the 2020s.
