There are cars perfect for commuting. There are cars perfect for racing on the track. Then there are cars perfect for weekend jaunts that let you enjoy the open road and breathe in the fresh air. As for Lamborghinis, they definitely fall into the last two categories. And holding up proudly for the "fun-under-the-sun" group is the Lamborghini Gallardo LP560-4 Spyder.
Based on the sporty Gallardo LP560-4 coupe, the Spyder has a fully lined soft-top that can be opened or closed in 20 sec. To ensure the Gallardo looks just as good with the top up as it does with the top down, Sant'Agata designers and engineers made sure the top's profile in the up position flows smoothly into the rear deck. The rear shoulders also have been raised slightly to make room for the stowed top.
The $221,000 Spyder features the same all-aluminum chassis and body as the coupe, along with the 560-bhp (DIN) 5.2-liter V-10 engine driving all four wheels. Either a 6-speed manual or the e.gear 6-speed paddle-shift transmission can be ordered. Weighing in about 300 lb. more than the all-wheel-drive Gallardo coupe, the convertible will sacrifice a bit of performance. However, with the top down, the Spyder offers a near-unobstructed 360-degree view of the surroundings, and there's no better spot from which to hear the V-10 wail. And the rich aroma of Italian leather almost makes you feel like you're driving in Italy under the beautiful Tuscan sun. Hard to choose between the Balboni and Spyder? Absolutely. Even Valentino himself had a hard time picking.
Too bad there's not a Balboni Spyder...
