Hundreds of people gathering in Traverse City on Saturday to not just walk but “March for Babies.”

March of Dimes puts on the annual event that raises money to help improve the health of moms and babies across the country.

“It’s really a celebration for all these little kids that have made it and struggled and then arrived,” March of Dimes Greater Michigan Executive Director Ginger Feldman said.

Both big and little steps were taken across two miles of Traverse City.

In part to enjoy the nice weather but also to support a great cause.

“Ultimately we are a fundraiser and we are trying to raise money to continue to research the programs that we do to help our moms and babies in Michigan,” Feldman explained.

Specifically babies born prematurely.

A march honoring and celebrating those who spent their early lives in the newborn intensive care unit or NICU.

“You can look at the crowd and they’ve all come together to celebrate and support families,” Feldman added.

Seven year-old Kinley Gillis walked for her sister.

“My baby sister Elin died because she came out of my mom’s tummy too early,” Kinley said.

“She was born at 24 weeks and passed away after living in the NICU at Helen DeVos for 10 months,” Amanda Gillis said.

In 2015, Amanda and Anders Gillis lost their daughter Elin.

They’ve have had four NICU babies.

The Gillis’ live in Traverse City and were this year’s Ambassador Family.

“We are here to raise awareness and gather support. It’s basically a bunch of us who have had babies in the NICU that get together and we go for a big and we raise money for the March of Dimes,” Amanda, added.
