Castillo's son Eric was shot three times in September of 2004 by Crips gang member David Lewis while the teen was playing basketball at a birthday party, according to local reports.
Stockton police said Lewis was a member of the North Side Gangster Crips, the same gang Meeks is affiliated with.
Lewis, 17, was sentenced to 142 years and four months in prison for killing Eric.
Although Castillo's son was murdered more than a decade ago, the painful memory is renewed when she sees Meeks' name in celebratory headlines.
Speaking to the Mirror, Castillo said: 'I don’t understand why this man seems to be getting rewarded. It makes me very angry.'
The mother revealed to the outlet how her son was struck down in a blaze of bullets.
She said: 'The gang came in like a Western – walking in a line and shooting. My son was in the driveway, shooting hoops.
'Eric pushed his girlfriend out the way and got shot three times – in his temple, his abdomen, and the foot. He died instantly.'
Speaking of Meeks, Castillo said: 'Is he really out of the gang life? How do we know?'

WHO ARE THE CRIPS STREET GANG?
The Crips is one of the most violent and largest gangs in the US.
Its members traditionally wear blue clothing and have been involved in murders, robberies and drug dealing.
It was founded in LA but has since spread across the country. The gang typically is made up of African-American men.
Crips have a notorious rivalry with the Bloods street gang who are known for wearing red clothing. The two gangs sometimes fight each other and are responsible for the majority of gang-related murders in LA.
Like the majority of gangs, once a member joins it is set for life. It is difficult to simply just leave the set or switch to another gang.
The Crips and Bloods actually started as an alliance of sorts. In 1971 a gang in Compton named the Piru Street Boys started associating themselves with a Crips set. After two years, the Piru gang started fighting with other Crips sets and it became gang warfare. In 1973, Piru broke off connections and formed rival gang the Bloods.
Crips and Bloods membership was glamorized over the years due to rap music and famous rappers associated with each gang.
Snoop Dogg, Warren G and Kurupt are known Crips members. Rappers The Game, Gucci Mane and YG belong to the Bloods.
Speaking to the Daily Mail Online in 2014, public information officer Joseph Silva called Meeks 'one of the most violent criminals in the Stockton area'.
He said: 'It's been a long-term investigation over many weeks and Mr Meek's gang was identified as the most violent and active gang in the area. Two of his charges are gang related.'
In a recent interview, Meeks hinted to Man About Town that he is still part of the violent Crips street gang that he ran with before being jailed.
Meeks claimed he has quit 'to a certain extent' since his rise to model fame, saying he was 'very extremely non-active' and that he is 'grown now'.
He added: 'Most of my tattoos are from my past which I am trying to shed and remove.'
Meeks has the words 'Crip Life' inked on his forearms and the letters 'NC' on his neck, which is believed to stand for the Northern Crips set he belonged to.
He also has a teardrop tattoo under his left eye, which often relates to a gang killing.
He acknowledged that the Crips tattoos he has emblazoned across his body would have an effect on his two step-children and one son.
'They ask me a lotta questions that are really hard to answer. All they gotta do is type my name, Google it. It tells about crimes and my background and my gang affiliation. There comes a million questions...,' he said.
'They want to be just like me - I don't want to tell, "yeah I'm a Crip and I'm this and I'm that and I've done this and I've done that".
'And it's nothing to boast about or even something you even want to talk to your kids about because next you know, they say "Okay well my dad's a Crip so that's what I'm going to be".'
Meeks, who was arrested in 2014 for weapons offenses (left), spoke publicly of his gangster past for the first time in an interview with Man About Town, during which he said he had quit being a Crip 'to a certain extent'
Meeks and his wife Melissa married eight years ago. She already had two children but they share a son together. Their marriage is reportedly on the rocks after he was spotted kissing Topshop heiress Chloe Green last week
Meeks (pictured prior to 2014) is a convicted felon who served nine years for grand theft
Meeks eventually became involved with the Northern Crips – a branch of the notorious Los Angeles gang, which has become one of the largest and most violent US street gangs.
He married a local nurse named Melissa, who had two children, at 24 and went on to have a son, now seven, with his wife.
When he was arrested in June 2014 as part of a crackdown on gangs by the Stockton police department, he was charged with five weapons offenses and two counts relating to gang membership.
Meeks, who was handed a 27-month jail term in 2015, could never have foreseen the fame he would attract after his mugshot quickly went viral and he was given the title hottest felon.
